More Retail Vacancy

My wife just called me from the Harper Hill Commons shopping center at the corner of Country Club and Peace Haven Roads.  She informs me that the Starbucks that had been located there is closed and the Dewey's Bakery shop that had recently opened there is also closed.  I'd read that the Starbucks was going to close but Dewey's closure surprised me. I checked the Dewey's website and they list Harper Hill Commons as one of their holiday locations so it sounds like it was only planned as a temporary location all along.  I'd say it's a sign of the times that Dewey's could find temporary space in a relatively new and upscale location like Harper Hill, and of course it's not a good sign that both the Starbucks and Dewey's locations now sit vacant.

Jon, Deweys does this every year. They find vacant space in high traffic shopping centers for their holiday crowds. So… no real surprise.

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the tip. I do think it’s a sign of how rough the economy is that there was even a vacancy for Dewey’s to use. Usually a mall like that is booked solid and the temp slots are only available in older malls. I don’t mean to say there’s anything wrong with Dewey’s being there, just that newer malls like that don’t normally have short term space available for a holiday operation like theirs to use. Not so in this economy.
    Thanks again

Jon, You are right about that… and I definately see your point. I BELIEVE Dewey’s begins scouting out sights for their holiday stores in early fall. They bounce back and forth between Sherwood Plaza and the Ace Hardware Shopping Center in my part of town (Robinhood Rd). Thanks for responding. I really enjoy your blog!
